Elementary III (Grades 5 – 6)

| Elementary III Student Classroom |
The Montessori Elementary classroom fosters the development of well-rounded citizens of our community, nation, and the universe. In addition to having solid academic skills, our students learn to be responsible, respectful, and resourceful. In short, they develop as humanitarians.
Characteristics of the Elementary III classroom include:
- Academic work is self-paced
- Independence is fostered by individual work plans
- Standardized testing monitors academic progress
- Peer teaching enhances self-esteemand builds leadership skills
- Students work together, developing collaborative skills
The students continue advanced work in mathematics (reasoning and skill) and language arts (literature and composition) at their own pace. Because the student at this level has a predisposed desire to learn about culture, our two-year curriculum covers the timeline of human development over the centuries, highlighting major contributions and events across all disciplines. Students learn about prehistoric cultures; ancient civilizations; the medieval period; U.S. History up through the Civil War; and culture. Study is not confined to textbooks. Students learn to make connections between disciplines (incorporating art, drama, and music) and become resourceful in gathering and presenting information to their peers. Students also continue their instruction in the uses of technology by incorporating excel spreadsheets and graphs and publisher documents into their presentations.
Students continue their education of a foreign language as well as formal art instruction to round out their curriculum.
